The  Sympathetic  Trilogy

Silas Upton Locke

Picture
Silas Upton Locke:  A car accident when he was 12 not only took his parents, but it also took all of his prior memories via a rare form of retrograde amnesia.  At least that's what he has been led to believe.  Things become very mysterious when he starts receiving esoteric cards out of nowhere.  Working at a Sleep Number Bed store in the mall and helping out Aggie Sussex on alternate weekends would wear anybody out.  Try doing it when you have chronic insomnia and hardly ever sleep.  Could the bulk of Silas' problems stem from Amber's betrayal and the thought that she may never wake up from her coma?  Will meeting Clara and Ava help him to start his life over again?  Will Silas strengthen his relationship with God and let some actual emotional healing begin?  Mr. Thomason has other plans.  It seems that perhaps there is more to Silas' past than he could ever have imagined.

Clara Marie Woods

Picture
Clara Marie Woods:  Being born in England and having been raised by kind God-fearing parents, Clara always assumed that her life was just like any other.  Simon Pennsbury, her childhood friend, just happened to come across paperwork that stated that Clara's biological mother had died in childbirth and the couple that had so lovingly raised her were her adopted parents.  This was right before she was to come to America---participating in a student exchange program with the Jenkins Family.  An evangelist, also from America, approached her as she stood in a graveyard near her home church, Westminster Abbey.  He began by repeating the ponderous question, "What are you living for?"  Clara did not know how to reply.  He then showed her from The Bible how she could trust Jesus as her personal Savior.  Clara is 23 now, helping Ava with her business, "Ava's Art Box," and working part-time as a receptionist at the Chicago Art Institute Museum.  One look at Silas Locke, and she is glad she stayed in America.  However, spending too much time with him may complicate matters.

Ava Jenkins

Picture
Ava Jenkins:  Ava is a talented artist, a beloved daughter, and a devoted sister.  She painted "The Mournful Muse" after seeing it in a dream.  If Ava were more responsible, she would not have such a challenging life.  Just 20 now, Ava becomes smitten with Silas almost as soon as she sees him.  Her flirtatious past has left her broken-hearted and cynical.  However, something about Silas' kind eyes make her want to make him hers.  There's just one problem.  Clara, her best friend from England is secretly head-over-heels for him as well.  The game can only go so far when the triangle begins to close in on itself.  Ava's prodigal mentality leads her to do whatever she thinks is necessary to make Silas understand that he should be with her, not Clara.  Silas and Clara share their belief in Christ and other bonding similarities.  Ava, trying her best to be comely and alluring, gets into a lot of trouble.  Her addiction to alcohol is the least of her problems.  Mr. Thomason sees to that.

Amber Locke

Picture
Amber Locke:  Born with a sensitive sympathetic nervous system that leaves her a bit fragile under stress, Amber led a quiet life of moderation and light jogging.  The Aggie Sussex Foundation for Inexplicable Medical Conditions took an interest in studying her. Her stint in the college theater became a way she could openly express herself--without overdoing it.  It was at a typical college function that she happened to meet Silas.  Their romance was truly a midsummer night's dream of forehead kisses, jogging together, and sharing a deep love for impressionistic art and the music of Claude Debussy.  After they were married, he had planned on getting one of the Sleep Number beds for them to share.  However, seemingly out of the blue, Amber met someone named Declan.  She wrote in her diary how something about Declan made her love for Silas wane.  Cheating on Silas and eventually divorcing him, her mood was completely different than it had ever been before meeting Declan.  She and Silas had an argument after all the emotional baggage had been examined.  It was then that, seemingly due to stress, Amber's condition caused her to collapse and go into a coma.  She is there now...sleeping in the hospital...trying to escape her coma dreams.  Silas wonders if she will ever wake up again.

Young Amber

Picture
Young Amber:  Young Amber is part of Amber's memories that exists in her coma-dreams, trying desperately to "find her way home."  A mysterious visitor meets with Young Amber, and they discuss all of Young Amber's options.

Timothy Jenkins

Picture
Timothy Jenkins:  A red-headed outcast, who grew up friendless and isolated, Timothy became interested in role-playing and the supernatural.  His paranormal investigations led him to meet the dubious Dr. Thaddeus Knox Craven, and study in one of his Mythological Metaphysics classes.  His final symposium presentation was to prove the existence of the creature: The Succubus.  However, Timothy's abnormal relationship with Clara led him to believe that she was secretly one of them---needless to say, she was very offended when wrongly singled-out in the auditorium audience.

Andrea Platz

Picture
Andrea Platz:  Clara's nemesis at work, Andrea Platz's constant bubble-gum-chewing and squeaky voice leave people annoyed and cringing at times.  Andrea's main hobby is gossiping.  Alice Chambers, Clara and Andrea's supervisor, schemes with Andrea to get Clara to become more open about her secret attraction to Silas Locke.  Andrea hatches a plan to give Clara more responsibilities when it comes to the installation of Silas' art exhibit in the museum.  A tiny earbud they give Clara is filled with Andrea's squeaky advice to Clara as she watches things unfold on the security monitors in a control room.  Clara eventually talks to Silas on her own, forsaking Andrea's meddling, and Andrea and Alice are amazed when they watch Clara flirting with Silas---without their help.  However, subconscious abilities may be playing a part in this love connection.

Paul Jenkins

Picture
Paul Jenkins:  Ava's father owned a hardware store, and, passing it down to Ava, he was taken-aback when she decided to convert it into Ava's Art Box.  Content to read his newspaper, he is somewhat detached and does not openly share his feelings with others.  When he develops a heart condition that will require surgery, Ava has to hear about it from her mother, Mindy, instead of him.  Ava's suffering relationship with Paul leads her into a life of drinking and flirtatiousness around men.  Paul's comical contribution stems from his being hard of hearing at the most inopportune times.

Mindy Jenkins

Picture
Mindy Jenkins:  Ava and Timothy's mother is concerned when Paul Jenkins' health becomes the topic of dish-washing conversation.

Taylor

Picture
Taylor:  A mysterious entity that seeks to help Silas, Taylor starts out by saying that Taylor doesn't have a name.  Because Taylor's gender and look is determined by the viewer and is constantly changing, Silas decides, based on a People Magazine featuring Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner, that the best unisex name he could give this mysterious helper would be Taylor.  From then on, secrets begin to surface.  Once invisible things become seen.

No-Show-Joe

Picture
No-Show-Joe:  While riding his bike, he was hit by a car.  Not knowing any of this, all of his friends, who had planned a party in his honor at his house, continue to wait for him.  He does not show up at the party because he is in the hospital--healing from being hit.  Silas learns of this after, and he and Ava visit Joe in the hospital together.

Dr. Thaddeus Knox Craven

Picture
Dr. Craven:  a PhD. in Mythological Metaphysics at the University, has had more than his fair share of run-ins with unsavory characters.  A condescending stickler, he gives everyone a psychological hard time. To most, Dr. Craven's students are glorified Big-Foot hunters, zombie enthusiasts, and UFO-spotters.  They are the first to camp-out for sci-fi movie premieres and wrap around whole city blocks each time The Apple Store comes out with their latest device upgrades.  Timothy's misguided supposition about Clara was his undoing---and Dr. Craven was not happy.  So consequently, The Bounty Hunter and Mr. Thomason were equally unhappy as well.

The Bounty Hunter

Picture
The Bounty Hunter:  Dr. Craven really needs to be more discriminating when it comes to his business associates.  This Russo-European bruiser, Remy Ugnyetavev, intimidates Dr. Craven and Timothy when the succubus he was promised cannot be delivered to him.  His trusty sheathed blade makes a good visual aid when threatening and blackmailing.

"The Curator"

Picture
"The Curator":  This eccentric entity seeks to add things to its collection...problem with that is, The Curator also kidnaps PEOPLE and beings to add to its collection!  Clara becomes a target.  Luckily Silas is able to fight The Curator off and prevent Clara from being taken away.  Who can blame it though?  Clara is exceedingly beautiful.  But that doesn't mean she wants to be a frozen-solid work of art to be admired.

Mr. Thomason

Picture
Mr. Thomason:  Convinced he has been on a 6,000+ year quest to find Silas Locke, Mr. Thomason uses his skills as a charmer to influence and blackmail the people around Silas and Clara.  Lying to Timothy, hypnotizing Ava, and just being a sarcastic minion and overall archenemy in general, Mr. Thomason is a subject of the Kingdom of Wrath.  His alliance with Amalek, an imposter from the Kingdom of Absence, were it to be found out, would be scandalous and treasonous.

Amalek

Picture
Amalek:  Seen as a floating head, and companion to Mr. Thomason on his journeys, Amalek is an imposter from the Kingdom of Absence.  He too is one of the UN*kind, so he is invisible to most seen humans.

Jack Radford

Picture
Jack Radford:  IT computer guy and boyfriend to Cassie Mehson, Jack Radford is as helpful as he is sarcastic.  Cracking jokes and making wise observations, Jack is a good friend to Silas and Ozzie.  Timothy Jenkins is told that Jack has been entrusted with the mysterious Book of the UN*kind they found in the library.  Jack theorizes that the things in the book are not only true, but are fundamentally important when trying to understand what will be happening to the seen world in the near future.

Cassie Mehson

Picture
Cassie Mehson:  Witty and funny, girlfriend to Jack Radford, she is always there to crack a joke.  Ava's nickname for her, "My Life as Liz," pretty much sums up her personality.  But underneath the sarcastic exterior is a vulnerable insecure part of Cassie that is hard for her to express.  She snaps at Clara when she gets the idea from Ava that Clara is nothing more than a boyfriend-stealer who only serves to be a tease to any man that comes her way.  This isn't true, and creates tension between her and Clara. Ironically, she hates hypocrites and accuses Clara of being one when she gets video evidence from her sneaky cousin.

Michael Cloverton

Picture
Michael Cloverton:  Working at the same mall as Silas, at Old Navy, Ava sees Michael as someone who could easily be a male model or star in a commercial.  His curiosity about Ava's condition after she gets mono. leads him into Ava's Art Box to check up on her.  Unfortunately, by this time, Mr. Thomason has already placed Ava under his hypnotic control---and to keep Michael quiet, he does the same to him.  Able to break free due to Mr. Thomason's limitations, Amalek gives Michael absent-mindedness and Michael walks away not having any memory of what has happened to either of them.

Oswald "Ozzie" Lemuel

Picture
Oswald "Ozzie" Lemuel:  Friend to Silas, though a bit too inquisitive for his own good, Ozzie has a nickname for just about everyone.  His nickname for Silas, "the old man," is an ironic one---but that is not discovered for quite some time.

Aggie Sussex

Picture
Aggie Sussex:  De facto CEO of the Aggie Sussex Foundation, Aggie, due to her misguided belief, and spending her "currency" of being sympathetic, is paying for Amber Locke's hospital bills--hoping she will eventually come out of her coma.  She carries many secrets around with her...at least until they become too heavy to bear.

Alice Chambers

Picture
Alice Chambers:  Clara and Andrea's supervisor at the Art Institute Museum, Alice teams up with Andrea to inspire Clara to be more assertive when it comes to flirting with Silas.  Alice may have sage advice, but some of her anecdotes come from a very dark place.  All she wants is for someone her age to be a little sympathetic and give her the time of day.  Is that too much to ask?

Amber's Parents

Picture
Amber's Parents:  Once blaming Silas Locke for their daughter being in a coma, they now see things with a different perspective.  They are also thankful to Aggie Sussex who continues to pay Amber's hospital bills under the guise that The Aggie Sussex Foundation is conducting experiments to find out how to treat others who share Amber's fragile sympathetic nervous system condition.

Silas' Aunt

Picture
Silas' Aunt:  Raising Silas Upton Locke from the age of 12 to the present after his parents' fatal car accident, Silas' Aunt was the only parental-type figure in Silas' life before meeting his benefactor, Aggie Sussex.  How much does she really know about Silas' past and destiny?  Those who wonder have to wait until movie #2 to find out for sure.

The Outlanders

Picture
The Outlanders:  What do rebellious creatures do to rebel?  Well of course, they renounce their kingdom affiliations and become enemies of the various empires that are already at war with one another.  Could this actually help Silas and Clara?  They are made up of all kinds of creatures that have fallen out of step with their rulers' wishes, so they dwell among the borders between Seen and UNseen, and all of the warring factions that man the marked jurisdictions.

Simon Pennsbury

Picture
Simon Pennsbury:  Clara's childhood friend from England, he has known her the longest and has seen her through a lot of troubling times.  Never a romantic interest, Clara doesn't think much when she receives mail saying that Simon will be visiting America, and her.  However, the last thing Silas wants to see is Clara being chummy with a handsome fellow who knows Clara almost better than she knows herself.  Thankfully, the high-speed ferry ride on Lake Michigan they all share ends with Simon's unexplained disappearance.  Clara thinks about Simon's words from then on.  Silas' jealousy vanishes with the sea winds.

Emotionless Facts

Picture
Emotionless Facts:  Timothy Jenkins plays bass for this garage band that he usually enjoys.  However, the prospect of a double-crossing Mr. Thomason makes it difficult for him to concentrate.  Ricky, the lead singer, chastises his fellow-bandmates, but only because he doesn't want to be wasting his time if they aren't going to take their musical exploits seriously.

Nihilori, Queen of Absence

Picture
Nihilori, Queen of Absence:  Ruler of the Kingdom of Absence, this tortured creature is paradoxically obsessed with both beauty and decay.  Her subjects have little regard for her, and her cruel ways do not inspire devotion.  Being at war with the Kingdom of Sleep all of these years has really taken its toll on her sanity.  So Clara's insolence is infuriating.

Slumberlord Somnog

Picture
Slumberlord Somnog:  Ruler of the Kingdom of Sleep, this menacing creature is in charge of the economy and politics of The UNkind.  His subjects have to do what he says because, even during this war, he is in charge of their mode of transportation---hitching rides through sleeping humans.  Being at war with the Kingdom of Absence all of these years has really taken its toll on his capacity for tolerance and patience.  So Silas' presence back in his once-old stomping grounds becomes a particular point of interest.  Being able to dream up your weapons isn't such a bad ability.  But when your old dreams start merging into the Seen realm, don't be surprised when people come asking questions.

The Former

Picture
The Former:  Before the fall, tasks were delegated to respective members of God's invisible creations based on their God-given abilities and talents.  Some chose to rebel against God and become UNkind, some chose to remain angels and other transitory spirits, but one remained undecided for a time--this is The Former.  Knowing of the fiery sword prophecy even then, he used his ability to form things as a means to fulfill what he thought was the only way it would be possible.  Finding out that sacrificing himself would be the only way, The Former, in the spirit of Melchizedek, becomes a picture of Christ.

The Ladder

Picture
The Ladder:  Following the same logic and allegorical reasoning as The Former, The Ladder is a personification of the means necessary to get the incubus and muse to become eligible to receive the shed blood of the promise.  Silas dreams about being on a rickety ladder that has no discernible top or bottom.  This may be more than a dream---a memory perhaps?

Winston

Picture
Winston:  Showing up claiming to be the great-uncle of "original Silas," Winston may be more than anyone suspects.  Entertaining him unawares proves useful.

Morgan

Picture
Morgan:  Arriving around the same time as Winston, Morgan too has ulterior motives. Claiming to be a "friend of Silas' father," Morgan intends to ever-so-slowly inform Silas of the details that have led him to the 21st century.

Duncan

Picture
Duncan:  Claiming to be a friend of the mother of "original Silas," Duncan reveals things to Silas and Clara that they need to know in order to continue their plans.  Everyone has a stake in the outcome of their adventure together.  Winston, Duncan, and Morgan all, in their own little ways, give them the extra insight and tools that they will need on their journey.

Furenemnon

Picture
Furenemnon:  Ruler of the Kingdom of Wrath, this tortured creature is always angry and disturbed.  His subjects, including Mr. Thomason, all seek to undermine him, so he is paranoid and vengeful when he finds mutiny among the ranks.  He will stop at nothing until the fiery sword is back within his gates.

Trembleatrix

Picture
Trembleatrix:  Seeing itself as a dominatrix of anxieties, Trembleatrix, Ruler of the Kingdom of Fear, becomes an integral part of what eventually happens to Clara.
